The ARCAN-ANS Nurses’ HIV/AIDS ATG Level II (Refresher) Course was held from 9th March to 11th March 2009 at Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI), Arusha, Tanzania. The forty (40) participants who attended were drawn from Tanzania, both mainland and Zanzibar. AKU-ANS has continued to play a catalytic role in regional capacity building of human resources for health professionals in the area of HIV/AIDS

The Advanced Nursing Studies Programme of Aga Khan University is one of the Partner Training Institutions of ARCAN capacity building projects on HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, care and management. ARCAN HIV and AIDS capacity building project targets health managers, physicians, pharmacists, clinical officers or medical assistants, nurses, laboratory technicians, and nutritionists. These professionals are divided into the following five groups which ARCAN refers to as ‘five thematic areas’: (i) programme managers and administrators, (ii) physicians including pharmacists and clinical officers or medical assistants, (iii) nurses, (iv) professional counsellors, and (v) laboratory technicians and nutritionists. The emphasis of training is on developing training of trainers (TOT) skills in HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, care, and management

The 10th ARCAN-ANS Nurses’ HIV/AIDS TOT training was held between 10th – 21st March 2008 at AKU-ANS Campus. Out of the invited 30 participants, the 28 who actually attended were drawn from Kenya, Tanzania (Mainland and Zanzibar) and Ethiopia. AKU-ANS has been involved in playing a catalytic role in regional capacity building of human resources for health professionals in the area of HIV/AIDS in the region. The aim of the two-weeks’ TOT course on HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment was to enhance the capacity of nurses from the region to enable them play a more robust in cascading the acquired knowledge to other health care service providers for improved service on the ground

The 2nd ARCAN-ANS Nurses’ HIV/AIDS TOT training was conducted between 14th – 25th August 2006 at AKU-ANS Campus. The 30 participants were drawn from Kenya, Tanzania Mainland, Zanzibar and Ethiopia. AKU-ANS is involved in the development of human resources for health and building capacity in the fight against HIV/AIDS pandemic in the region. The aims of the two-weeks’ TOT course on HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment were similar to the 1st TOT course that was offered in July for a similar group of participants

The 5th ARCAN-ANS Nurses’ HIV/AIDS TOT training was conducted between 12th and 23rd March 2007 at AKU-ANS Campus. The 27 participants were drawn from Kenya, Tanzania Mainland, Zanzibar and Ethiopia. AKU-ANS is involved in the development of human resources for health and building capacity in the fight against HIV/AIDS pandemic in the region. The aims of the two-weeks’ TOT course on HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment were similar to all the rest of the TOT course that have been offered in previous trainings for the same group of participants

AKU through ARCAN has conducted two trainings for Nurse TOT HIV/AIDS course between July and August 2006. A total of 59 nurses attended the trainings with 28 from Kenya. The end product of the training was the work plan which each course participant developed. The work plans still needed refining to conform to the country’s national HIV/AIDS Strategic Plans which is the essence of the Planning and Implementation Training Workshop organized by ARCAN at ESAMI-Arusha between 16th and 18th January 2007. The workshop was intended to harmonise the country ATGs’ work plans to be in line with the Tanzania’s (Mainland and Island) identified needs and national HIV/AIDS strategy
